Billing itself as ‘the longest Christmas market in Germany’, Duisburg Christmas Market is unique in the country for its lengthy duration – spanning for about 6 weeks from early/mid November until December 30.

We first visited this Christmas market in November 2018 and enjoyed exploring all the festive stalls well in advance of markets opening elsewhere in the country (like in Bavaria, where we lived!)

While we wouldn’t necessarily go out of our way to plan a trip just to see this Christmas market, it’s a great choice for travellers who want an extra adventure while visiting nearby markets in North Rhine-Westphalia like Cologne or Dortmund, or are looking for a Christmas market that’s open earlier and later than most.

So, looking to learn more about Duisburg Christmas Market, or perhaps need some guidance on planning your own trip there?

A Brief History of Duisburg Christmas Market

The Duisburg Christmas Market has been taking place for just over forty years.

Today, it’s the largest open air event in the city, taking over the pedestrianized city center for 6 weeks throughout the festive season.

With over 200 exhibitors and vendors to check out, it’s definitely a highlight of the local Christmas calendar, and a worthwhile market to check out for visitors who plan to be in the area!

Why Visit Duisburg Christmas Market?

Wondering whether Duisburg Christmas Market is worth a trip? Here are some reasons to visit:

It runs for a longer time than most other Christmas markets

If you find yourself visiting Germany in mid-November or after Christmas, odds are you’ll have trouble finding Christmas markets that are open.

Luckily, the Christmas markets in Duisburg open much earlier and stay open later than most of its fellow Xmas markets in Germany, meaning it’s a great option if you’re looking for a Christmas market experience a bit earlier or later than usual.

It’s close to many other great Christmas markets

Duisburg is conveniently located in Germany near a lot of other great cities for Christmas markets, like Düsseldorf, Cologne, Dortmund, and Essen.

So, if you’re hoping to visit multiple Christmas markets during your trip, then Duisburg is an easy stop to check off alongside some of the other big markets in the region.

There’s a nice variety of food and drink

While Duisburg’s Christmas markets may not be as elaborately decorated or fairytalesque as some of the other Xmas markets in Germany, one area where it does excel is food.

There are over 200 stalls that make up the Duisburg Christmas Market, which means tons of choices for not just shopping, but also eating and drinking. We tried an Eierpunsch here at a stall near the entrance of the market and it was phenomenal!
