Christmas Markets to Visit in Stockholm
Like in many large cities, there are several Christmas markets that take place in Stockholm throughout the festive season. Here are a few highlights you shouldn’t miss:
Stortorget Julmarknad (Stortorget Christmas Market)
Situated in Stockholm’s Gamla Stan (Old Town), this is the country’s oldest and most famous Christmas market, ongoing since 1837.
At this cozy market, you’ll find over 40 stalls selling delicious treats, gifts and perfectly warming glögg, all in one of the most magical settings that Stockholm has to offer.
Skansen Christmas Market
Speaking of magical settings, what about the world’s oldest open-air museum?
The Skansen Christmas market takes place every year on the grounds of Stockholm’s Skansen, an open air museum that showcases the Swedish way of life, along with all the traditions, history, and craftsmanship that have helped to shape the country’s culture.
While Skansen is already one of the top things to do in Stockholm, it becomes all the more magical at Christmas time, when dozens of Christmas market stalls fill the museum grounds with the scent of tasty treats and of course, plenty of great gifts to buy.
Julmässan på kungliga Hovstallet (Christmas Fair at the Royal Court Stable)
Though it only takes place for one weekend a year (typically the first Advent weekend), the Christmas Fair at the Royal Court Stable is one of the most memorable Christmas markets in Stockholm thanks to its location: the very stable where royal horses and their carriages are kept.
Little wonder why it bills itself as the “finest and most exclusive Christmas fair.”
Schysst Jul (Nice Christmas) Market
For a wonderful Stockholm Christmas market with a twist, Schysst Jul (which translates to Nice Christmas) is a must-visit.
The goods sold here are all fair trade and organic, meaning more mindful shopping opportunities, along with informative resources on how you can take part in bringing on social change & justice.
