Why Visit Graz Christmas Market?

Wondering if Graz’s Christmas markets are worth visiting? Here are some reasons to add it to your list!

Walkability

Graz markets its Christmas Market season as “the Advent of Short Strolls”, drawing attention to the huge number of Christmas markets you can visit all within walking distance of each other.

Variety

With over a dozen Christmas markets to offer visitors, Graz boasts an impressive variety of markets to visit, many with a unique theme or twist like crafts from around the world, a children’s advent fair, arts and crafts markets, and more.

Graz is awesome!

While we sadly haven’t experienced Christmas market season in Graz yet, we have visited in the Spring and fell completely in love.

Graz is such a cool and unique city, with beautiful architecture that blends the old and the new, along with some mindblowingly delicious local wines.

We’d highly recommend visiting any time of year, but we’ve heard the city is especially wonderful at Christmas.

Christmas Markets in Graz to Visit

As mentioned above, one of the unique differentiators of Graz’s Christmas market scene is just how many markets they have within easy walking distance of each other.

Here are some must-visits:

Hauptplatz Christmas Market

Located in Graz’s Hauptplatz (right in front of the beautiful city hall), this is one of the main Christmas markets in Graz.

The starring attraction here is of course the large Christmas tree centerpiece, which is accompanied by plenty of festive huts and dazzling light projections that illuminate the square.

Traditional Christmas Market – Franziskanerviertel

This traditional Christmas market is Graz’s oldest, and aims to put a spotlight on rural traditions, offering local goodies from around the Styrian region and handmade gifts like tin toys and traditional Christmas ornaments/decorations.

Children’s Advent fair – Kleine Neutorgasse

For those visiting Graz’s Christmas markets with little ones in tow, this little Advent fair in Kleine Neutorgasse offers plenty of kid-friendly activities, like a carousel, big wheel and of course, lots of stalls selling candy and treats.

Arts and crafts market on Mehlplatz

This assortment of stalls in Mehlplatz offers up a variety of unique arts and crafts to buy, along with dazzling light projections and displays to create the perfect festive atmosphere.

Handicraft market on Färberplatz

Ideal for those who are pursuing some serious gift shopping, this market in Färberplatz (true to its name) is dedicated to handicrafts from local and international craftspeople, meaning plenty of opportunities to find the perfect handmade (and unique) gift for everyone on your list.

Crafts from all over the World on Tummelplatz

For a Christmas market in Graz with some international flair, this Christmas market in Tummelplatz is a must visit.

Here, you’ll find unique creations and products from all around the world, from ornaments and paintings to textiles and gemstones.

“Aufsteirern”-Christmas market on Schlossberg hill

This Graz Christmas market takes place only on weekends, but its atmospheric perch on Schlossberg Hill makes it one of the most enchanting Christmas markets in the city, with a cluster of stalls selling all sorts of wonderful gifts.

STIKH Arts and Crafts Market in the Joanneum quarter

For another small Christmas market in Graz focusing on local handicrafts, this Advent market in the Joanneum Quarter is a great choice.

Here, you’ll find displays from STIKH, a local handicraft organization that prioritizes creativity, novelty and individuality… meaning you’re sure to find high-quality products and gifts that you won’t find anywhere else.

Grieskindlmarket on Nikolaiplatz

Looking for a Christmas market in Graz with a sustainable twist? You’ll find that at the Grieskindlmarket on Nikolaiplatz, where the central focus is on sustainability and reducing waste.

Here, you’ll find all kinds of handmade products from fashion and home decor to natural cosmetics and jewelry… all with a green focus of course.

Christmas market on Südtiroler Platz

This cozy cluster of stalls may not be the biggest Christmas market in Graz, but it’s a special one for a few reasons, one of which is its giant Christmas tree bauble decoration and its atmospheric Steirerhütte.

Circus Wonderlend on Mariahilferplatz

Of course, Graz’s Christmas market scene isn’t strictly about shopping. The Circus Wonderlend at Mariahilferplatz is proof of that.

This market offers a rich program of performances in addition to its colourful range of stalls, along with some dazzling light projections that are sure to impress!

Christmas market on Glockenspielplatz

If your goal is to buy and support local, this Graz Christmas Market’s theme is “Styria”, meaning you’ll find lots of local producers here selling delicious Styrian delicacies/products, along with handmade crafts from the region.

Advent stalls at Eisernes Tor

Last but not least, if you’re looking to give back a little while sipping all your glühwein, be sure to stop by these Advent Stalls at Eisernes Tor, which are all run by charitable organizations.

Unique Souvenirs to Buy From Graz Christmas Market

Graz is the capital of Styria, an Austrian state famed for many delicious specialties.

While of course, you can’t go wrong with buying local handicrafts and handmade gifts, a few uniquely “Graz” souvenirs to buy from Graz’s Christmas markets include…

  • Pumpkin seed oil – a very famous specialty from Styria that is absolutely delicious!
  • Pumpkin anything – besides pumpkin seed oil, you can also buy lots of tasty pumpkin products (like pumpkin pesto for example) that is absolutely divine
  • South Styrian wines – the crisp wines of South Styria are a truly underrated marvel. Make sure to grab yourself some bottles from “Austria’s Tuscany” to see for yourself

    • Hi Zoltan, just to clarify: we are simply a website providing information regarding Christmas markets, and are not the organizers of any Christmas markets themselves. We’d recommend getting in touch with the official organizers of whichever market you’re hoping to sell at for more information. Best of luck!
