Why Visit Montreux Christmas Market?

Wondering if Montreux Christmas Market is worth a visit? Here are some reasons why you should consider adding it to your trip:

Gorgeous Lakeside Location

In terms of setting, Montreux may have one of the prettiest locations of any Christmas market in Switzerland.

Set along the shores of Lake Geneva, your Christmas market shopping here is made all the more delightful by snow-capped mountains and crystal clear blue water. So picture-perfect!

Flying Santa

Another unique feature of the Montreux Christmas Market is its “Santa & His Flying Sleigh” spectacle, where Santa magically appears to glide over the lakeside promenade in his sleigh 3 times a day.

Unique Santa Train

Of course, visiting Montreux Christmas Market also means a unique opportunity to visit Santa in his Grotto at Rochers-de-Naye.

… Even more magical, you’ll have to take a special cogwheel train to get there!

This unique Christmas experience is a special opportunity for kids (old and young) to meet Santa throughout the Montreux Noël season, and is one of the most unique festive offerings of the city.

Those travelling with little ones will also be happy to know that there’s an entire section dedicated to kids just below the Big Wheel, where an Elves’ square with fun workshops and activities await.

Enchanting Light Displays

While we only saw the market during the day, we’ve seen a lot of photos of what the Montreux Christmas Market looks like by night and… wow!

All along the lake, you’ll find pretty light installations, including some that are interactive.

Where is Montreux Christmas Market?

Unlike other big cities in Switzerland like Zurich or Lausanne which have multiple market locations, Montreux actually only has one main Christmas market along the city’s lakeside promenade.

Of course, this strip is filled with over 170 artisans and exhibitors, along with multiple restaurants, attractions, and rides, so it has plenty to offer visitors, whether you’re staying overnight or just coming for a day trip like we did.

To main highlights of Montreux Christmas can be found along the lake at Quai de la Rouvenaz and Quai Edouard-Jaccoud.

Here are the main market sites and their locations:

  • The Lakeside Christmas Market (and Restaurants): Quai Edouard-Jaccoud
  • The Elves’ Village: Place du Marché
  • The Lumberjack Village: Quai de la Rouvenaz

  1. hallo ..i want to ask if the 24 of december is the final date of closing the montreux christmas market or maybe there is extending another days for this christmas markets?

    • Hi Majdi, the 24th is the official last day, and in the past I don’t think there has ever been a history of extending past that date, unfortunately! Most traditional Christmas markets in Central Europe close just before Christmas day, so I would plan your trip for those official dates. Hope that helps!
