Guebwiller Christmas Market (also known as Blue Christmas) is a truly unique Xmas market event in Alsace that commits itself to a simple theme: blue.
Yes, the color blue.
From blue-lit Christmas trees to building facades covered in twinkly blue lights and projections, this Christmas market is like an enchanting Smurfy wonderland, all while maintaining the charm of a traditional Xmas market experience through wooden chalets selling all sorts of treats and gifts.
We first visited this Christmas market in November 2019 and while we found it to be much smaller than some of the other markets on our Alsace Christmas road trip, it was definitely one of the most memorable (and uniquely photogenic).

Why Visit Guebwiller Christmas Market (Blue Christmas)?
Wondering whether Guebwiller Christmas Market is worth a trip? Here are some reasons to visit:
Its unique theme
Having visited many, many Christmas markets in Europe over the years, we can safely say that we can’t think of any others that are dedicated to a color.
And while the theme might seem simple, in real life it creates a very unique and magical atmosphere, especially when you see all the main monuments of the town lit up in blue.
Is the blue theme worth a visit all on its own? Maybe not, if your goal is to get lots of shopping done… but we think Guebwiller is so close to other noteworthy markets that a quick detour or pitstop is well worth it, if even just to snap a photo or two!
Its local, non-touristy feel
Since the Guebwiller Christmas Market is relatively unknown to international tourists, the vibe here is remarkably different to other markets in the area, like Colmar or Strasbourg.
In addition to thinner crowds, the overall energy here is more relaxed, which added a lot to the market’s charm.
If you’re looking to escape the feeling that you’re wandering around with a mob of your fellow tourists, then this a lovely little detour to take.
It’s close to many other amazing Christmas markets
Last but not least, it’s worth noting just how close Guebwiller is to many of the other more famous markets in the Alsace area.
Located somewhat halfway between Colmar and Mulhouse, the Christmas markets in Eguisheim, Kaysersberg, Obernai, Ribeauvillé, and Riquewihr, Thann, Kingersheim, and Pfastatt) are all less than 45 minutes away by car.
Guebwiller is even doable as a day trip from Strasbourg, which is less than an hour and half away.
So, if you want to add a unique market to your Alsace Christmas itinerary, then definitely consider Guebwiller’s Blue Christmas. We definitely wouldn’t plan an entire overseas trip just to see this one market, but as a stop of a bigger trip, we’d definitely recommend it!
Christmas Market Locations in Guebwiller to Visit
Wondering where to find Christmas market stalls in Guebwiller? Here are the main locations of Guebwiller Christmas Market:
Église Notre-Dame de Guebwiller
During our visit, one of the best parts of the Guebwiller Blue Christmas Market was seeing the blue lighting display at the town’s main church, Église Notre-Dame de Guebwiller.
In front of the church, we also saw a small cluster of stalls selling food and gifts, along with some cute blue Christmas trees.
NOTE: Based on information on the official website, we’re not sure if they still have Christmas stalls at this location, but we are quite certain the church will always be illuminated in blue for the occasion, so it’s worth a stop regardless!
Place de l’Hôtel de Ville
The main location of the Guebwiller Blue Christmas Market (in terms of stalls) was definitely in front of the Town Hall (Hôtel de Ville), where several stalls were set up around a central ice rink.
This is where the market was at its busiest, but it was a really lively and fun spot well worth checking out!
Place Saint-Léger
Last but not least, this wasn’t open during our visit back in 2019, but according to the event’s main site, there is also a new Children’s Village set up at Place Saint-Léger, with a variety of children’s programming to enjoy.
