And after walking the richly decorated streets of this UNESCO World Heritage Site for ourselves, we’re happy to confirm that Regensburg properly gets into the Christmas spirit… and its markets are among some of the nicest we’ve visited in Germany.

Why Visit Regensburg for Christmas Markets?
Wondering whether Regensburg Christmas Market is worth a trip? Here are some reasons to visit:
There are a few different unique markets to choose from
Much like in Munich, one of the key draws of Regensburg as a Christmas market destination is that it has multiple markets to offer.
We’ll be discussing each of the main Regensburg Christmas markets below, but what you need to know for now is that there are several different markets that you can visit in the Regensburg city center, making it the perfect destination to visit for a full day/evening.
From a small and cozy market selling only handmade artisan goods to a magical romantic market on the grounds of an epic palace, there are several excellent Regensburg Christmas markets worth visiting, which is why we’d definitely recommend spending at least one full day here.
Regensburg is always beautifully decked out for Christmas
The first time we visited Regensburg, it was actually the day before Christmas markets were set to open, which meant we got to see all the amazing decorations, but without any illumination.
This was a huge disappointment, because Regensburg really goes all out with its beautiful Christmas decorations! Plus the city itself (a UNESCO Heritage Site, in case you didn’t know) makes for a perfectly colorful and scenic backdrop.
There are a lot of other great things to do in Regensburg
If you’re looking for a destination to visit for more than just its Christmas markets, we highly recommend adding Regensburg to your list.
In addition to a nice selection of markets, there are also plenty of unique museums and historic attractions to admire, including the city’s 12th century stone bridge, and its beautiful mustard yellow town hall.
Again, the entire city center is a UNESCO World Heritage site, meaning history and beauty around every corner.

Wondering where to find Christmas market stalls in Regensburg? Here are the main locations of Regensburg Christmas Market:
Regensburg Christmas Market (Christkindlmarkt Regensburg)
The main Christmas market event in Regensburg can be found in the historic heart of the city at Neupfarrplatz, with some additional stalls around the Galeria Kaufhof.
In addition to wooden chalets selling gifts to take home, this is where you would go to get your fix of typical Christmas market foods like sausages, candied nuts, and of course, Glühwein.
There are also some activities here for kids, like a little carousel.
PRO TIP: For a nice view of the market from above, head upstairs to the Galeria Restaurant on the top floor of the Galeria Kaufhof at Neupfarrplatz and grab a coffee to enjoy on their terrace!
Romantic Christmas Market at Schloss Thurn und Taxis
Another wonderful Christmas market to visit in Regensburg can be found at the Schloss St Emmeram, conveniently located less than a fifteen minute walk from the city’s central train station.
Imagine a beautifully elegant and cozy market organized on the grounds of a sprawling 500 room palace, complete with a magical children’s forest with rides, an illuminated park promenade, illuminations on the palace facade and dozens of stalls selling all types of great gifts and treats.
While this market is different than most others in that there’s an entry fee, we assure you that the small amount you pay is more than worth it.
Not only do you get a sneak peek at the opulent grounds belonging to the historic Thurn und Taxis family, you get to browse through what we consider to be one of the most beautiful small Christmas markets in Germany… with dozens of amazing stalls selling tasty food and beautiful handicrafts to take home.
PS: You can read our full guide to the Romantic Christmas Market at Schloss Thurn und Taxis for more info.
St. Katharinenspital Advent Market (Spital-Adventsmarkt)
One of the smaller ‘hidden gem’ Christmas markets in Regensburg can be found at the Spitalanger, right next to the St. Katharinenspital.
With an atmospheric location right along the river, this is where you would go for a cozy Glühwein offering views over the famous Regensburg skyline, with the surroundings becoming especially magical thanks to glittery projections on the building facade after the sun sets.
Of course, there’s also a handful of tasty food and gift stalls for you to browse here as well.
Lucrezia Market
If you’re looking for artisan gifts with handmade flair, then be sure to visit Regensburg’s Lucrezia Market, located in Haidplatz and Kohlenmarkt.
This market prides itself on its handmade offerings, as well as its lively program of events, including an art exhibition and other cultural performances.
Of course, this Regensburg Christmas market also wins points for its cozy and welcoming atmosphere.
